For people born with rare diseases those that affect only a tiny portion of the population it's crucial to detect the disease early, because many of them have no readily available treatment.A Korean bio company has developed a technique for diagnosing them genetically.. that can identify some 250 rare diseases within a week of a baby's birth.Lee Eun-jin reports.

인구의 극히 일부에만 영향을 미치는 희귀질환으로 태어난 사람들은 질병을 조기에 발견하는 것이 중요합니다. 왜냐하면 많은 사람들이 쉽게 치료하지 못하기 때문입니다.국내 바이오기업이 아기가 태어난 지 일주일 만에 250여 개의 희귀질환을 확인할 수 있는 유전자 진단 기술을 개발했습니다.이은진 기자입니다.

 

 

 

 

South Korea defines "rare disease" as one that affects fewer than 20-thousand patients, and for which no appropriate treatment is prevalent.Of these rare diseases, over 80 percent are caused by a genetic disorder.When it comes to newborns, existing diagnosis of these rare genetic diseases was mostly completed by metabolic diagnosis based on blood tests,... a method that only covered 70 types of diseases.

우리나라는 '희귀질환'을 2만명 미만 환자를 괴롭히고 적절한 치료법이 널리 보급되지 않은 질병으로 정의한다. 이들 질병 중 80% 이상이 유전적 장애로 인해 발생한다.신생아에 관한 한 이러한 희귀 유전질환의 기존 진단은 대부분 혈액검사를 기반으로 한 대사진단, 즉 70가지 질병만을 다루는 방법으로 완료되었다.

The metabolic diagnosis method often requires repeated testing due to its low accuracy, which risks a delay in treatment. "Metabolic diagnosis can vary depending on the type of food you eat...
